What is Social Media?

Perhaps the best way to understand what social media is is to understand what social media is not.

Social media is not traditional media. Thinking about social media in a traditional sense will only inhibit your understanding of it. To fully understand social media, you should embrace the fact that this is a new tool that is constantly evolving.

Social media is not something you can understand by sitting on the sidelines. To get started in social media, sign up for Twitter, join a Facebook group and update your LInkedIn profile.

Social media is not the answer to all your marketing problems. Social media is at the peak of the Gartner Hype Cycle, which states that new technologies are often over-hyped but eventually reach a “plateau of productivity.”
